Currier Museum of Art visit

Tuesday morning we researched the Museum and used the Visual Thinking Strategies method "What's Going On In This Picture?”

Our students were looking on Edward Hopper painting CHOP SUEY, trying to answer these questions:

  • What is going on in this picture?
  • What do you see that makes you say that?
  • What more can you find?

Here are some of the student's answers:

Some people are dining in a restaurant or hanging out in a cafe/Lounging around
Old style restaurant
Takes place at night/Maybe it is the winter season?
Some people are having tea
Woman is wearing expensive earrings/50's style
Is there another picture?
Ladder?
Hidden letters (S)

Than we researched more about museum and made this presentation:

By Ana
By Anna On Wednesday, I saw the guitars in the Evolution of the Guitar Exhibit. There were many different types of guitars. There was a guitar made out of an armadillo!

I really enjoyed the Evolution of the Guitar Exhibit at the Currier Museum. I liked walking through the exhibit with Ms.Watford and seeing all the different colored guitars. I saw some guitars that were green, gold, red, yellow, and blue. My favorite guitar was the one that was made out of license plates.

Yesterday, I saw the Medieval to Metal exhibit.  The guitar was around for over centuries.  I definitely like electric guitars.  I even played on air guitar!

My favorite part was the guitars.  I found it interesting how unique each one was.  The collection was great, and just being able to see them was amazing.  Other amazing things were the paintings, my favorite was Lady in a Chair  (Women Seated in a Chair by Pablo Picasso). There was also a room on the old testament, and I read an article that went like this: There were two mothers. Each has a child.  One dies so they were fighting over the remaining baby, so the king said to split the baby equally.  One agreed, the other gave it up because she didn't want to risk the baby's life.  Then the king knew which was its real mother.  I really liked that museum.

I've seen Bill Viola's artwork in the exhibit yesterday.  I saw the video about him in the dark room video.  A lot of people got wet in the video.  The video was in a very slow motion.  The name of the video is called "The Raft."  Bill Viola was born in 1951 in Queens, New York.  More than four decades ago, he started making videos and broadcast arts.

George Reflects
on the Final Curtain

On Wednesday July 10, our class went to the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire. While we were there we saw the Edward Hopper Exhibit which featured The Last Curtain. This painting was Edward Hopper's last painting. Hopper was an American realist painter from Upper Nyack, New York. In the painting there are two actors, one male and one female, who are holding hands and looking at the audience probably receiving applause for their performance.

It was great!
