2018-19 Hydroponic Season

By Clare and Hope:

Using the instructions from the biology club, we planted the seeds in the vermiculite which was in the rock wool cubes and filled the tray with some water. We really appreciate the biology teachers and students who put together the instructions for us. We planted cucumbers, lettuce, basil, and peppers. Then, we brought the tray upstairs to the biology room in 435. We put the tray under a special light in the biology room for the seeds to grow. After a couple weeks, the plants started to grow. When they were ready, we checked the pH level of the water in the hydroponic towers to make sure it was right for growing the plants and put the plants in the towers. When the vegetables are ready, we hope to make a salad out of them.

Science Question of the week:

Where does the term "hydroponics" come from?

Jack was first with correct response:

Etymology: formed in English from HYDRO "water" and PONOS "labor" (GREEK)
Hydroponics is the process of growing plants without soil.
